The Shoulders We Stand On: A Historical Parable of Prevenient Grace

This story beings in Wabana, “The place the place daylight first seems.” It begins with a noblewoman of unmatched magnificence and style from a distant kingdom, clothed in legend because the years have handed. It’s a story of the windfall of a violent storm at sea, a shipwreck on the rugged shores of Bell Island. The lack of life and but, a narrative of survival and love. Of the fisherman John Kelly who opened his house to a princess because the eighteenth century started, and sparked my very own enlightenment.

This story and my redemption has at its roots, The Nice Hunger Winter of 1816. Its pages are carried alongside by that sunny afternoon when Titus Rogers endlessly modified Bell Island. It speaks of an iron mine below the ocean and its darkish facet. Of kid labour and exploitation, of discrimination and the heavy hand of the commercial age; the greed of males.

It’s a story of latest hope carried to me over time by a younger lady raised as an orphan for need of meals. She braved the journey to a overseas metropolis, stood in opposition to an abusive husband, endured grinding poverty inflicted by a colonial world and finally handed her legacy of hope on to me.

Finally it’s my story of how ghosts from centuries previous lead by the darkness of this world to a small room of sunshine. That place the place daylight first seems.
